"Tell My Daughters"

This summer I had the privilege of partnering with Abby Goodrich and Kaio Productions to make the launch video for Tell My Daughters. The weekend we filmed in Atlanta I was often the only guy on set - it was a humbling, inspiring, and rewarding experience. I tried to get out of the way as much as possible and let the powerful lives these women lead do the talking.

It's a lot of work to change how we talk about things... to reshape, re-frame, and restructure a societies perception. Whether or not you or someone you love has been a victim of sexual assault, I hope you'll take a few minutes to read about the work Tell My Daughters is doing and dare to be a part of it.

Employment is Important

A few friends launched a Kickstarter today for a new clothing company called Victor Athletics that is going to create work in a rural Tennessee town. You should check it out.

I got to help film for their Kickstarter video at the factory where Victor Athletics clothing will be made. There were over 100 work stations, but only a few of them were filled. It felt both hollow and hopeful.  So much had once been --- but thanks to Victor Athletics, so much was yet come.

All this to say, employment and work is important. At 25 years old, I'm still forming and figuring my ethic and approach to work, but what I've learned recently is that having work is a gift.

I recently polished up a documentary on a clock factory in Chicago that employs people who are legally blind.  I learned some profound things while there and I hope you can too. Regardless, I hope you are working and know that having work is a meaningful thing. If you're unemployed or in-between jobs, whatever you're doing, I hope you are pouring your whole being into it.

A short documentary on a clock-making factory in Chicago, IL where all of the employees are legally blind. Visit the Chicago Lighthouse website to learn more about all they're doing! chicagolighthouse.org

A Poem on Wonder

Wonder is like a jar of air

That we fill with pebbles

One at a time

There is no wonder

If we don't look for small stones

On the muddy, paved, and golden ground

There is no wonder

If we do not open our hands to cold hard things

And warm them up

I wrote this on January 25, 2015 in an email response to my father. He is a true-poet.

Caleb Pahl | Brother

I made this video 5 years ago to celebrate my brother & brotherhood.

Caleb carries a lot of titles: Man | Son | Brother | Husband | Father | Leader

This video was made when he was transitioning from "brother" to "husband". An ode to the bond we had growing up and a celebration of his coming union with Claudia. I shot it on $25 point-and-shoot digital camera & I've never shared it before. Hope you enjoy!

ross, my brother, and i traveled to savannah georgia to see joshua and his fiancee corazon. along the way i documented random moments. 4 months later i used the clips to make a video for my brother's birthday. he is getting married in july. these adventures weigh more in sight of the transformation our brotherhood will undergo. love you caleb. looking for the circle you will start. the song used is "Day 1" by explosions in the sky

Nashville Frozen in Ice-Storm - Feb 17, 2015

Nashville got a lil' winter ice storm last night. In the world of a child, it's awesome, beautiful, and beckons a bit of adventuring... but for most adults it just means no work, or difficulty in getting to work. Which side did you find yourself on?

Also. All the icicles on the grill (pictured in the slideshow below) of my car kind of look like boogers. #JustSayin  ;)

If you want some more, I posted another photo on instagram that I took with-my-iPhone

Nashville MLKJr Day / Jan 19, 2014

God never intended for one group of people to live in superfluous inordinate wealth, while others live in abject deadening poverty. God intends for all of his children to have the basic necessities of life, and he has left in this universe “enough and to spare” for that purpose. So I call upon you to bridge the gulf between abject poverty and superfluous wealth.
— MLK Jr.

My brother Caleb bought me "A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings of Martin Luther King Jr." when I was in high school. MLK is one of Caleb's heroes because of his commanding rhetoric of hope, his actions against injustice, and his involvement in change. My brother Caleb shares a lot in common with MLK Jr., namely his speech delivery, his servant-like approach to everything, and his close relationship with Jesus-Lord-God-Creator. I'm thankful Caleb has encouraged me to read the deeply inspiring, convicting, and motivating words of MLK Jr.  His speech "The Drum Major Instinct" has informed how I approach my competitive nature: daring use it to serve others rather than challenge them.

If you have not seen SELMA, you should.  If you have not listened to the voice on the other side of things, you should. If you have not made an effort to become friends with people that are different than you, you should. When I look at the disparities that still exist between whites and blacks in our country, I do not sense hope, but he has taught us to declare hope.  May we be bold enough to engage the things that need changing.
